Gospel Matt 11:2-11
Isaiah in his prophesy tells us the kind of joy and miracles that will happen to those who will believe in Our Lord when he comes ” the wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom ” “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped, then shall the lame man leap like a deer and the tongue of the mute sing for joy” these are signs that accompanied the Lord when He came, hence when John the Baptist’s disciples seek to confirm who he really us , He sent them back relating to John what the prophet Isaiah prophesied long ago, He made the blind to see, the deaf to talk, the lame walk. What else do we need more. He spoke with authority.
St James in the second reading urges us to be patient and wait for the Lord. This message is for us all especially this Advent season. Wait for the Lord by reconciling with one another and with God. Wait with a joyful and pure heart. Forgive one another and ask for forgiveness. Make use of the sacrament of penance. The Lord is also waiting for you.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist while in prison needed confirmation directly from Jesusif He was the messiah. Jesus did not give him a direct answer rather he answered in the affirmative using the signs and miracles that accompanied his ministry as evidence that he was the messiah. Many of us today are like John Baptist. We are imprisoned by our daily struggle against evil and sin, injustice, hatred and social vices that, like John the Baptist we seek confirmation from Jesus if truly He is the messiah. Jesus gives us the same answer. Look around you carefully to see the wonders that God performs in your life everyday. He is responsible for the gift of life, health and many other blessings we may be too engrossed to notice. He is coming again be prepared to receive HIM.
Lord, I do long to have my soul purified by You. I do desire holiness of life. Help me to begin this process here and now so that I can begin to experience the joy and freedom You have in store for me. Jesus, I trust in You.
